How hay fever affects children
Children can react to allergens such as pollen and house dust in a similar way to adults. Common symptoms include:

- 👀 Itchy or watery eyes
- 👃 Runny or blocked nose
- 😣 Cough or throat irritation
They can be treated in a similar way to adults, with many options available over the counter.
Reduce exposure
- 🪟 Keep windows closed during high‑pollen times
- 🚿 Shower and change clothes after being outdoors
- 🕶️ Wear wraparound sunglasses
- 👕 Avoid drying clothes outside
- 💧 Apply a barrier balm around the nostrils
- 📈 Check the daily pollen forecast
If your child has Asthma
Hay fever can worsen the symptoms of asthma or other respiratory conditions. Seek medical advice if you notice:
- 😤 Increasing breathlessness
- 🫁 Wheeze
- 🧱 Chest tightness
- 💨 Reduced response to usual inhalers

When to seek medical advice
- Symptoms affecting daily life despite using all pharmacy treatments available (under 12 years only). We are unable to prescribe anything further for children over 12 years of age.
