Surgery clinics

We offer a range of clinics and services at the surgery. There are some tasks you can do, such as health reviews, using our online forms.

Antenatal care

Antenatal care is the care and help you receive from health professionals during the course of your pregnancy. It is important you take good care of your own health and that of your unborn baby during pregnancy.

As soon as you find out you are pregnant, you should get in touch with us to find out more information on the services and support that are available to you.

Asthma

Asthma is caused by inflammation of the airways. These are the small tubes, called bronchi, which carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, the bronchi will be inflamed and more sensitive than normal.

Our practice nurses have specialist asthma qualifications. They run clinics in order that asthma may be assessed, advice offered, queries answered and the correct treatment ensured.

Blocked ears

Ear irrigation is only recommended in the rare occasions where ear drops and bulb syringing has failed to work. Ear syringing can lead to ear infections, perforated ear drum and tinnitus (persistent noise) and therefore it is only performed in exceptional circumstances.

Please read the blocked ears (wax) self-care guidelines for patients (PDF).

If you think you have persisting wax despite taking the above measures please make an appointment with your doctor or nurse to discuss.

Cervical smears

The practice nurses provide a cervical cancer screening service. See national guidelines.

The test involves the nurse doing a vaginal examination and taking a sample of the cells on the surface of the neck of the womb (the cervix). The sample is then examined under the microscope at the lab.

The aim is to look for and identify cancer warning cells. If these are found then treatment can be organised to prevent cervical cancer ever developing.

To have your smear simply book an appointment with the practice nurses.

Chronic conditions

The practice through our team of GPs and practice nurses provides continuous monitoring, and helps patients with the management of chronic conditions including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, asthma, and chronic pulmonary disease.

Contraception

There are many different methods of contraception. Your GP will discuss your choices with you to find the type that will work best for you.

At Hadwen Health, Dr Naish, Dr Young are qualified to fit coils, and Dr Hitchen and Dr Young are qualified to fit and remove implants. If you wish to book an appointment for a coil or implant, either discuss it with your GP or make a telephone appointment with one of our nurses.

Contraception is free for most people in the UK and allows you to choose when and if you want to have a baby. The only way to help protect yourself against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is to use a condom every time you have sex. Other methods of contraception prevent pregnancy but don’t protect against STIs.

COPD

Chronic disease monitoring follows the progress of a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease.

Also known as COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) people suffering from this have trouble breathing in and out. This is referred to as airflow obstruction.

Breathing difficulties are caused by long-term damage to the lungs, usually because of smoking.

At the surgery we regularly monitor patients with COPD and provide an action plan to assist and help you to relieve your symptoms.

Diabetes

Our specialist diabetes team will provide you with support, regular reviews and the day to day care of your needs.

Heart monitoring

The purpose of this clinic is to support you in managing your heart condition and to ensure that the quality of your health remains at its best. It has been proven that correct management of people with cardiovascular disease will reduce the risks of death, heart attacks and admission to hospital.

At the clinic we will review risk factors, discuss lifestyle changes, review medications and arm you with the knowledge you need to manage your condition.

Prior to your appointment you will need to have a blood test. This will mean that your cholesterol and other blood tests will be available for discussion at the clinic.

The cardiac monitoring clinic also sees patients who have a high risk of heart disease, but have not actually had a heart attack. They do this through a once off appointment in the clinic and then with support via the practice nursing clinic with any ongoing lifestyle issues. To access this clinic you need to be referred by your GP or practice nurse.

High blood pressure

If you are taking blood pressure medication please ensure you arrange to have an annual blood test, it is easier to remember this if you arrange it in your birthday month. You also need to have your blood pressure checked every six months.

Immunisations

One of the most important things that a parent can do for their child is to make sure that they have all their routine childhood vaccinations. It’s the most effective way of keeping them protected against infectious diseases.

Ideally, children should have their jabs at the right age to protect them as early as possible and minimise the risk of infection.

Find out which jabs your child needs, when they need them, and what the benefits of each jab are.

Initial health assessments

The practice has been commissioned to complete Initial Health Assessments (IHAs) for children in care in Gloucestershire.

To arrange an IHA please call the surgery on 01452 505853 between 9am and 4pm weekdays.

INR (warfarin monitoring)

The practice is able to monitor and dose patients who are currently prescribed warfarin.

The Coaguchek machine enables warfarin levels to be checked with a simple finger prick and the INR Star software enables an immediate dosing schedule to be given.

Mental health

There are many useful resources available to support and promote positive mental health.

Please see this Mental health signposting sheet (PDF) for more information.

Minor surgery

Certain small surgical operations can be performed at the surgery.

With minor surgery the recovery time is usually short and you will be back to your usual activities fairly quickly (depending on your procedure).

Before attending for minor surgery you will need to see a doctor for the diagnosis and then you will be given an appointment to attend for your procedure.

NHS health check

The practice offers NHS health checks to patients aged between the age of 40 and 74, once every 5 years.

The check is to assess any future risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. The check should take no longer than 30 minutes. The check is based on straightforward questions and measurements such as age, sex, family history, height, weight, and blood pressure. There will also be a simple blood test to measure cholesterol level, glucose and kidney function.

If you would like to have a Health Check prior to being invited then please contact the practice.

Palliative care

Palliative care aims to support patients and their families with cancer and other potentially life threatening illnesses to achieve the best possible quality of life.

The specialist palliative care team within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is made up of professionals who can help in the community and in hospitals. They help with the management of complex problems particularly when an existing plan does not seem to be working.

A specialist palliative care multidisciplinary team meeting takes place every week to discuss progress with patient care and treatment options. Patients will be informed of any discussions about them that take place during this meeting.

Postnatal care

Postnatal care extends for between 6-8 weeks after the birth of your baby. During this period, routine checks are carried out by the health visitor and you and your baby’s recovery is monitored.

During your postnatal care you will find out about feeding, illnesses, safety and more. You will be able to ask your health visitor questions and request advice.

Sexual health

A range of sexual health services are offered at the surgery including:

  • contraception and contraception advice
  • fitting and removal of Impanon etongestal implant
  • emergency contraception and emergency contraception advice
  • testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea and genital warts
  • testing and counselling for HIV and AIDS

If you need advice and support with a sexual health matter or you think you have a problem you would like to discuss, please make an appointment.

Sexual health services are freely available for everyone.
