Health and Wellness Event

Your health is unique to you, as are the things that will help improve your wellbeing. There is no right or wrong way, it is simply about finding what is best for you to help you take control of your health.

This event aims to inspire and empower you to do this by bringing together a wide range of local and regional services, organisations, and experts.

With specialist talks, information stalls, fitness demonstrations, and free health checks, there will be something for everyone! Come for as much or as little of the day as you wish.

Please note: this event is for patients registered with Hadwen Health or Quedgeley Medical Centre. However, we welcome patients to bring non-registered family members and close friends for support. Please ensure all attendees register individually. Children under the age of 16 do not need to be registered.

Specialist Talks

There will be a series of talks delivered by experts throughout the day.

Talks will last 30-45 minutes each, with breaks between to allow attendees time to look around the information stalls and speak to other professionals and service providers.

10:00 Diabetes Prevention Nicola Jersche, Xyla Health & Wellbeing Nicola will be discussing the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP), which Xyla Health & Wellbeing delivers the across the UK, including Gloucestershire. You will hear about how this prevention programme and how it can help people to reduce their weight, increase their physical activity levels and improve their diet, empowering them to take charge of their health and wellbeing and learn how to prevent diabetes.
11:00 Prostate Health Mr Okeke, Consultant Urologist, Nuffield Health Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Its causes aren’t clear, but if you have a male family member that has been diagnosed with the disease, there is an increased risk of you developing it. And the risk of getting prostate cancer gets higher as you get older. Mr Okeke will be talking about risks, screening and tests, diagnosis and treatment options during this talk.
12:00 Breast Care Ms Kallaway, Breast Care Consultant, Nuffield Health During her talk, Ms Kallaway will talk about the importance of being breast aware in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She will cover how to check breasts, the risks of developing breast cancer, options for breast screening, and what to do if you are concerned about your breasts.
13:00 Long Covid Dr Raghuram, Respiratory Consultant, Nuffield Health ‘Long COVID’ is commonly used for both ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 syndrome. Dr Raghuram will be looking at what Long COVID is, what the symptoms of it are, how to self-manage, and options for rehabilitation.
14:00 Pain Management Dr Cathy Stannard, Clinical Lead for Pain Transformation, NHS Gloucestershire ICB Persistent, chronic or long term pain is complex, and there is rarely a single treatment to resolve it. Cathy will talk about what chronic pain is and how the pain management service available in Gloucestershire can help address all aspects of persistent pain management, and help people to live well with pain. Cathy was a Consultant in Pain Medicine for 23 years and is now Clinical Lead for Pain Transformation in NHS Gloucestershire ICB. She writes and lectures nationally and internationally on pain, evidence, and opioid therapy.

10:00 The Impact of Trauma Dr Richard Castle, Diverse Leap Experiencing trauma can be a debilitating experience for the long-term, particularly if the event is not properly processed by those involved. Richard Castle is a trauma psychologist who has been involved in the aftermath of many traumatic experiences, both in the military context and also following disasters such as the Grenfell Tower Fire (2017). He is also a survivor of the Paddington Rail Disaster (1999). Richard will talk about how trauma can adversely impact on the survivor’s mental health and also how we can support ourselves and each other when the unthinkable actually happens. Richard will also talk about the role of Diverse Leap and how this Matson-based charity can support people with poor mental wellbeing

13:15 Dementia Steve Shelley-King, Consultant Dementia Nurse Steve is an NHS Consultant Dementia Nurse and the Countywide Dementia Clinical Lead for Gloucestershire. This talk will look at how to reduce your risk of dementia, signs and symptoms of dementia, how to get a diagnosis, and what support is available after diagnosis.
14:15 Diabetes Remission Nicola Jersche, Xyla Health & Wellbeing Often termed the ‘NHS Soups and Shakes’ diet, and formerly known as the NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme, the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme is a free new service for people with Type 2 diabetes. Nicola from Xyla Health & Wellbeing will be talking about what this programme involved and how it can promote rapid weight loss, long term behaviour change and type two diabetes remission.

Weight Management

You might think you know what weight management is, and how to lose weight, but we guarantee there is far more to it than you think.

Ian Preston from Health Life Fitness will be running talks and exercise demonstrations throughout the day, aimed at providing top tips on how to lose weight, get fitter, be healthier, age well or just look and feel better.

11:30 Diet & Nutrition Talk covering things such as energy balance, healthy eating, macronutrients, portion sizes, alcohol, hydration & metabolism.
13:00 Mindset Talk covering things such as behaviour change, goal setting, barriers & setbacks, confidence, motivation & expectations.

Each talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Between talks, Ian will be providing exercise and fitness demonstrations that look at of exercises you can do at home and how to get more out of your gym programme.

Ian has over 30 years of work and experience within the NHS and health and fitness sector. He is a qualified and experienced personal trainer, fitness instructor, and Functional Ageing specialist. As well as running Health Life Fitness, Ian also works for our PCN, patients to make lifestyle changes to help them improve their overall health and wellbeing. This often involves working with GPs, nurses and other clinicians to support patients around lifestyle changes such as weight management, being fitter or managing a long term condition such as pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

We’ll have a team of nurses on site throughout the day, offering free checks for:

  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar
  • Pulse rate

These will be done in the privacy of our consultation rooms. Booking not required.
